1.What is the background to this?

With the ever-increasing number of media houses and content aggregators
across the board, Netstudios Africa (NSA) recognises the dynamic nature of today’s global media industry. Despite being vibrant, Uganda’s creative industry’s growth rate remains low with minimal empowerment of the players involved. The industry continues to operate informally, limiting its capacity to attract support. Industry growth remains inhibited majorly by a lack of formal education, lacks proper structures to identify and develop the creative talent of youth, resulting into very little exposure to the global industry. On the other
hand, limited training opportunities will often result in limited opportunities for mentorship by professionals.

2.What is the project about?
  • Conduct a sector diagnostic study of the creative industry. This will be achieved through a survey of at least 1000 youth. We will also engage players and stakeholders in the industry through Key Informant and/or Expert
  • Interviews, Consultations, Focus Group Discussions, Case Studies, Observations, and a Literature review to better understand THE CREATIVE industry in Uganda.
  • We will engage stakeholders in the industry including but not limited to Institutions and Universities, Film clubs and Associations, Media Houses, CSOs, Government Agencies and Ministries.
  • Build Capacity via skilling: With the findings from the diagnostic study, we shall intervene as follows: To create a life changing opportunity for 100 youth, especially girls/women by providing on the job learning and training in the creatives industry. This will be aimed at ensuring that the new trainees receive market relevant support and training to secure an independent future through meaningful and sustainable employment in the creative industry.
  • Spear head Product development and distribution: Using the Netstudios state of the art facility, this 100-youth group shall be supported to produce and market two complete products that is, a documentary and a short film.
3.What is the Net studios Africa Digital film making       course?

The Digital film making course is a life changing opportunity for 100 youth, especially girls/women providing on the job learning and training in the creatives industry.

4.Is the training for individuals or can we apply as a small company
already working together in the film making industry?

The training will onboard on an individual basis.
However you are encouraged to have your team members apply individually.

5.I am interested in being part of the film making course, what are the requirements that I need to meet in order to qualify?

Youth aged 18 to 35 years in the audio visual industry.  Ability to communicate in English. (Young girls /women encouraged to apply)?

6.What should I expect during and after taking the digital film making
course?

An intense digital film making course with class and out of class activities covering pre production, production and post production training and entrepreneurship between November 2022 and January 2023

7.How is this different from the business arm of NSA?

NSA received a management grant from Mastercard Foundation and the project
is “Understanding the creative industry in Uganda for creating dignified employment” This is managed separately from NSA as a business.

8.What do I need to do to take part in the digital film making course

9.Who will own the audio-visual products produced?

The youth group will own the intellectual property of content produced.

10.What are the roles of Net studios and Mastercard Foundation?

Net Studios Africa : Under this initiative, Net Studios Africa will mobilise, provide for an on job learning experience for 100 youths to facilitate creation and linkages to gainful employment.

Mastercard Foundation: Mastercard foundation will play an oversight role to ensure that the Young Africa Works (YAW) strategy enables 30 million young people, particularly young women, across Africa to access dignified and
fulfilling work by 2030.
